Alison Krauss w/Tony Lane, Jimmy Rankin & Gordie Sampson

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

This benefit for the Linden Waldorf School is billed as “Music in the Round: An Evening of Roots Music and Dance.” It’s not clear what sort of dancing the event organizers have in store, but it’s a safe bet no one will be doing the Harlem Shake. One of the four performers who’ll trade songs in familiar in-the-round format is Alison Krauss, the bluegrass-rooted, fiddle-playing, seraphic singer who singularly transcended her native genre and added a worshipful mainstream audience. She’s recorded the work of roundmate Gordie Sampson — as have Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban and just about every big country act with pop sensibilities. And Sampson’s fellow Canadian songwriter Jimmy Rankin is also on the bill. That just leaves Tony Lane, a trad-leaning country songwriter whose cuts span at least the past 20 years, right up to Easton Corbin’s latest album.
