Reel to Real: Dave Grohl's Sound City
If Los Angeles’ Sound City Studios’ shag-carpeted walls and analog consoles could talk, they’d regale you with tales of Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, Cheap Trick, Rage Against the Machine, Guns N’ Roses, Nine Inch Nails, Neil Young, Nirvana and scores of ’80s metal outfits cutting classic albums. The studio’s contribution to rock ’n’ roll is incalculable. But it’s one that, like rock ’n’ roll itself, trails off into the sunset with the rise of digital recording — the analog-exclusive studio shut its doors in 2011.
Dave Grohl, Gen X’s John Bonham, is one of rock’s last icons and an outspoken traditionalist and advocate for analog recording. He also knows his way around a camera, having directed a handful of Foo Fighters’ videos, and recently a Soundgarden video. Sound City marks Grohl’s debut as a documentarian. Through interviews with former Sound City denizens like John Fogerty, Stevie Nicks and Butch Vig, Grohl tells the studio’s story.
