Megan Keely is an American Singer-Songwriter. She self-released her debut album, Acorn Collection, in October 2010.
Megan’s sound is influenced by an amalgam of soul, jazz, and folk, and evokes a timeless waft of nostalgia while carving a vibrant, fresh new niche for itself. She puts on a show that is teeming with rich musical sensitivity and delicate emotion. When joined by her family, their instruments melt together naturally, leaving plenty of space for the music to breathe. Whether accompanying herself solo or playing with a full band, Megan gives a performance that is not to be missed.
The Bay Area native brought her naturally compelling singing and songwriting to San Francisco in 2008, and her full-hearted warmth and audience just keep growing. Her style draws on an eclectic range of old-time, folk, blues, and jazz while sounding approachable and new. Vocally inspired by Lauryn Hill and Etta James, her songwriting influences include Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Joni Mitchell, Caetano Veloso, Leonard Cohen, and Tom Waits.
Though she grew up in a musical family, she was not always a performer. Family vacations throughout her younger years were primarily centered around her father’s touring psychedelic rock band, The Flying Other Brothers. But she remained in the audience. Watching musicians like G.E. Smith and Pete Sears and her own father, Bert Keely, she longed to learn how to play but was mortified by stage fright.
It wasn’t until she enrolled in a Jazz Vocals Workshop that she attempted to face her fears and sing in front of an audience. With the help of instructor Sasha Dobson, Megan achieved her first vocal performance singing Agua de Beber with a jazz ensemble on the final day of the workshop. Days later, she went to see a friend play a show in Oakland, only to find that the show was at a 21+ bar. She was only 18, but when her friends and family told the bouncer she was in the band, he let her in. That night she did end up on stage, winning the crowd with a sultry, jazzy version of Wind Cries Mary by Jimi Hendrix. Though petrified, she realized that night how much she loved singing beyond the private confines of the shower and the car.
Although her academic studies took her on a voyage to Ithaca, NY to study Landscape Architecture, she spent nights and weekends teaching herself guitar and ukulele, eventually joining jazz ensembles and developing her songwriting skills. Upon graduation she returned to California, and while working at a Landscape Architecture firm downtown, she began performing on street corners and at open mics. She soon found herself packing venues such as Viracocha, Amnesia, and The Hotel Utah, often playing solo but mostly playing with her brother and father.
In October 2010, she recorded eight original songs in her drummer Larry Marcus’s living room, for the deliciously intimate debut album Acorn Collection, which features her brother Brandon Keely, her father Bert Keely, and friends from her San Francisco musical community. Megan’s flair for design is expressed in her packaging and merch for Acorn Collection: her handmade acorn necklaces and earrings have sold well both at shows and online via bandcamp.
She currently lives in San Francisco and plays regularly with her brother Brandon on upright bass, her father Bert on guitar and trumpet, and is occasionally joined by her friends Larry Marcus and Kevin Brown on percussion as well as her friend Antja Jean Thompson on fiddle. Megan also plays in a new side project called Sparkbox with Kelly McFarling, and occasionally sits in on backup vocals for several artists including Wolf Larsen, Con Brio, and more.
Megan and her brother Brandon are currently working on a new collection of songs they have written as a duo. One of their songs, called Rules, landed a spot on the highly acclaimed soundtrack companion album, The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 and Beyond, produced by T Bone Burnett. The recording features the lovely Jayme Dee on lead vocals, Brandon on guitar, and Megan on backup vocals and ukulele. The album skyrocketed to the top of the charts, and Rules has been quite popular as an individual track, rising to #143 on iTunes the day of its release. Stay in touch for more to come.
