fun. w/Tegan and Sara
Despite the monster chorus to their 2012 Grammy-garnering über-hit, this trio of indie-pop vets is not really all that young — but they aren’t advertising falsely when it comes to their (literally) to-the-point band name. Such blunt self-branding coupled with the band members’ goofy threads and the relentless ubiquity of upbeat, plastic heart-string tuggers like the Paul Simon-indebted title track to the band’s breakthrough LP Some Nights, and of course, “We Are Young” (the first song by a rock band to crack the Billboard Hot 100 since Nickelback’s infinitely more annoying “How You Remind Me”) might make you wanna hate the band based on principle alone. But before you do, check out their live show and see singer Nate Ruess’ mini-Mercury shtick in action. There’s a reason this Woods gig went on sale the same day as the band’s Ryman debut in February, and subsequently sold out. An even greater incentive is opening Canadian sister act Tegan and Sara, who reached glittering heights of pop gold this year with their must-have, impossibly catchy cross-over effort Heartthrob.
