Marnie Stern w/Gnarwhal

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

A friend once described sludge metal as a Black Sabbath 45 played on the 33 1/3 RPM setting. In that spirit, it might be apt to refer to Marnie Stern as Who’s Next played at 78 RPM. Complex constructions of shifting rhythms and fist-pumping pop hooks — punctuated by Stern’s signature high-register shouts and warp-speed guitar runs — would dissolve into so much impenetrable manic clatter in less-talented hands. Instead, it’s a cathartic expression of philosophical observations gleaned over the course of Stern’s years on the road — a journey she started as an adult, but along which she progressed with remarkable speed. Her fourth album, Chronicles of Marnia, finds her scaling back the tiniest bit from her reputation as Edna Van Halen, opening up spaces in the arrangement to make room for her voice, per instructions from producer Nicholas Verhnes (Spoon, Dirty Projectors). We could think of no more appropriate locals to open the show than post-hardcore-garage duo Gnarwhal, who sound akin to a smoothie made by frappéing your copy of Dino Jr.’s You’re Living All Over Me in the same blender with Rush’s Moving Pictures.
