It only takes a spark to light a fire in someone revealing a person’s God given talents. For Baylor Wilson, it happened at the beginning of her junior year at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas, TX. Though, she was accepted into the dance department, she continually found herself picking up a guitar, and writing lyrics. Performing music has become her passion, and her sights are set on attending Belmont University in Nashville to further pursue her knowledge of the industry.
Baylor began in Crested Butte, Colorado in the Summer of 2010 playing her original works on the street corner as well as “open mic” nights, which helped developed her fan base. She would choose to sit at a coffee house or on a park bench any day and play her music, over the average teenager’s Friday night plans. However, she hopes to perform in front of thousands of fans watching them sing along someday, and knowing that her music is having an impact on their lives.
She had been warned of rejections and filled with many opinions regarding the music business. Nevertheless, Baylor is not pursuing this dream with expectations to become a millionaire. She is following her desire to do what she knows ultimately brings her peace of mind. Playing music, even dance, and film production are her most creative outlets. She is convinced that Nashville, Tennessee will provide more opportunities than she could ever imagine.
"I want to inspire others," is Baylor's main motto. And, she knows that the entertainment industry has an enormous amount of influence on it’s audiences. She would like to share her life experiences through music. Good times and bad, she has learned so much about herself while writing lyrics. "I have an amazing new perception on how artists express themselves from simply being surrounded at Booker T. Washington," Baylor states. In addition, she has a new found favorite band called The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. The lead singer, Jeff Hanna, has become somewhat of a mentor to her, giving her unexpected pointers, and guidance with some of the songs she has written. Baylor says, "I want to be that for a young aspiring musician someday." Maybe she'll become a teacher, or maybe write scores for major motion pictures.
She doesn't exactly know how this journey will pan out, but she does know that she wants to leave a mark. She is forever grateful to Jeff Hanna, John McEuen and the other Nitty Gritty Dirt Band members for reminding her of her strengths and mentoring her. "I will do the same for another, if offered the chance."
