The David Mayfield Parade w/Carolina Story

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

While it’s true that David Mayfield has shared the stage with The Avett Brothers and Mumford & Sons — and that Seth Avett appears on the new David Mayfield Parade album — Mayfield’s musical instincts overlap with the spirited folk-rockers’ only to a point. Where Mumford set course for banjoland after hearing the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, Mayfield grew up picking bluegrass-gospel with his family — including little sister Jessica Lea — and joined up with youthful ’grassers Cadillac Sky for a time. His last album leaned heavily on his love of the Buddy-Holly-to-Don-Gibson range and craftsmanship of vintage pop radio, but on much of his latest, Good Man Down, he merges serious picking (some of it courtesy of Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver) with left-of-center indie-rock arrangement ideas, all of it framing his surprisingly accomplished confessional balladry. Mayfield’s the rare musician of his generation who’s equal parts showman — he’s been known to somersault across the stage — and crooner
