Alkaline Trio w/Bayside & Off With Their Heads

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Last we checked — which was probably around, oh, 2005 — Alkaline Trio made proficient, tight and melodic pop punk with tongue-in-cheekily macabre lyrical turns. They dropped albums with punny titles like From Here to Infirmary and Good Mourning, and frontman Matt Skiba crooned tunefully about things like Church of Satan High Priest Anton LaVey (“Bless me, dark father, I have sinned,” he sings in the chorus to “Hell Yes,” “I’ve done it before and I’ll do it again”). But because Alkaline Trio put out albums all throughout the Aughts, when pseudo-spooky and ultimately underwhelming emo acts like My Chemical Romance and Thursday were all the rage, a sort of guilt-by-association cloud has long loomed over the Trio. Well, turns out they’re still at it, and last month’s My Shame Is True is littered with just the sort of better-than-average, unapologetic and, yes, cleverly morbid pop punk that Alkaline Trio was created to make. Created, we can only assume, in the pits of hell! Well … Northwest Chicago, technically.
