A Tribute To the Music of Ron Davies : Hosted By Gail Davies featuring
It’s a testament to both Ron Davies’ songwriting and the respect his younger sister Gail Davies commands in the country music community that the tribute album she’s produced on him begins with several of the usual generous suspects — Vince Gill, chief among them — and reaches to singers who seldom put themselves out there for this sort of thing, like Shelby Lynne and John Anderson. Besides that, it’s a multi-artist effort that avoids the typical pitfalls of a multi-artist effort; it sounds unified, even nuanced, and the singers and songs are excellently matched. Lynne tackled the song that Ron Davies is probably best known for, the song that first he, then Three Dog Night and finally David Bowie recorded, during his Ziggy Stardust phase: “It Ain’t Easy.” Back then, the Kinks’ Ray Davies was sometimes mistakenly credited with writing it. But Unsung Hero: A Tribute to the Music of Ron Davies will help right the record, showcasing 22 of the nearly 600 songs he wrote during his career and the sophisticated singer-songwriter pop to blues-rock to jazz balladry range he worked with ease. A number of the album’s performers are on board for the release show, including Matraca Berg, Mandy Barnett and Crystal Gayle; Kevin Welch is even driving up from Texas. The album and show proceeds will go to the W.O. Smith Music School.
