The Boxcars

Bluegrass
Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

There’s no doubt a band that includes a couple of guys who have traveled far beyond the realm of mainstream bluegrass — Adam Steffey with Alison Krauss and John Bowman with The Isaacs — could take a run at cross-genre fame, but that’s not how The Boxcars roll. Instead, as their It’s Just a Road (Mountain Home) shows, they’d rather stick close to home, investing their energy and considerable talents in going deep rather than broad. And while they’ve won two well-deserved IBMA Instrumental Group of the Year awards already, The Boxcars are no slouches in the vocal department, either — not with three distinctive singers on board. The new project reaches into the classic songbooks for a few like “Never Again” and “Trouble in Mind,” but nearly half the selections come from the pens of guitarist Keith Garrett and ace utility man Ron Stewart, and they’re dandies.
