Joe Mullins and the Radio Ramblers

Bluegrass
Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Joe Mullins is one busy dude these days. He’s simultaneously overseeing one of the best old-school radio stations in the country (Xenia, Ohio’s WBZI) and helming the increasingly popular (and equally old-school) Radio Ramblers. A second-generation ’grasser, Mullins grew up around music at its very best, and the Radio Ramblers’ take on tradition is more informed — and therefore richer and more nuanced — than that of many who wave the banner. Joe’s equally gifted as a singer and banjo picker, and he’s assembled an outstanding group drawn from the same scene. New guitarist Duane Sparks fits in well, and Mike Terry (mandolin), Tim Kidd (bass) and Evan McGregor (fiddle) are at once well-rounded players and underappreciated singers. Surprisingly, it’s the first time they’ve appeared at The Station Inn, so look for the historically minded Mullins to take note of the significance.
