Signature Series - Blair String Quartet
After a highly acclaimed premiere in Spring 2012 at Carnegie Hall of a modern masterwork by contemporary composer Michael Hersch, Blair's signature string quartet turns its attention to the giants of the classical canon, with pieces that mark significant moments in the lives of three key composers. Dmitri Shostakovich's String Quartet No. 8, composed in 1960, is an autobiographical work that reflects the composer's response to the horrors of war. Ludwig van Beethoven's Quartet in F Major, Op. 135, was the last full string quartet the composer wrote; a relatively short and genial piece as compared with his other late-career string quartets. Johannes Brahms' String Quartet in B-Flat Major, Op. 67, was also his final string quartet. More joyous and lighthearted than his other two published string quartets, it was also his professed favorite.
