Starshot Black was created when the lead singer and guitar player Collin Johnson met lead guitarist Roger Denton at a Cinco de Mayo party in 2009. Our wives, as well as the wife of bass player Jason Norris, work at the Nashville Zoo and zookeepers are known for having good parties here in Nashville. We jokingly thought of naming the band Zoo Husbandry, but we are sticking with Starshot Black. The musical chemistry between Roger and Collin was apparent from the beginning. After a few jams we already had several songs to work with. When Jason, who is also an excellent french horn player, joined the band we had a solid backbone. We were not truly Starshot Black, however, until our drummer Kenny Bledsoe joined the band at the tail-end of 2011. Our former drummer was experiencing alcohol and drug related problems and abruptly left the band. Kenny is a precise, innovative drummer who can be considered the engine of Starshot Black. Every member of Starshot Black comes from an unique musical background. Collin's influences range from the Talking Heads to Judas Priest while Roger comes from a country music background, but knows how to rock equally well. Everyone from Brad Paisley to Jimi Hendrix has influenced his style of playing. Jason's eclectic tastes range from classical music a la Beethoven to rock bands such as Helmet, A Perfect Circle and NIN. Kenny is a true rocker and enjoys bands such as the Foo Fighters and My Morning Jacket. However, after years of playing with his blues playing father, Kenny enjoys the blues greats like B.B. King as well.
