Songwriter Session feat. Kristen Kelly and Striking MatchesCountry
The songwriters invited to participate in these Saturday brunch-time performances at the Country Music Hall of Fame typically have Top 10 track records, but Kristen Kelly and Striking Matches are young country acts who write their own material, share a manager, and are still very early in their careers. Striking Matches is a coed duo made up of Sarah Zimmerman and Justin Davis — who supplied Nashville’s Scarlett and Gunnar with a delicately romantic duet several episodes back. Last year, Kelly managed to crack the country Top 30 — that’s no small accomplishment considering that it’s hard to break new acts, solo women are few and far between on country radio, and the format has always been fickle about singers and songs that lean R&B. The single that broke through was “Ex-Old Man,” a Kelly and Paul Overstreet co-write with a perky sound, a catchy lick and a lot of blues-style testifying about being done wrong.
