The Rambling Rooks

Bluegrass
Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Here’s a great idea: Take three outstanding bluegrass musicians who spent a solid five years working together in one of the genre’s most widely admired and influential bands, season each with a decade’s worth of their own individual efforts, then bring them back together for a new side venture. As members of the Lonesome River Band back in the ’90s, Ronnie Bowman (bass), Don Rigsby (mandolin) and Kenny Smith (guitar) were deservedly on top of the bluegrass world, and while their paths have since diverged, the lure of working together again proved irresistible last year. Their vocals are an unmatched blend of sophisticated precision and mountain soul, their picking — especially Smith’s — strong and inventive. The Rooks can legitimately be said to have the best of both worlds, so you’d best arrive early — this one’s likely to sell out.
