Don Rigsby Band

Bluegrass
Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

It might not be altogether modest for Don Rigsby’s website to advertise him as a “world-class singer and performer,” but it’s wholly accurate, and after a decade working a full-time academic administrative job in his native eastern Kentucky, arguably necessary. Which makes the title of Rigsby’s new Ralph Stanley tribute — Doctor’s Orders — even more apropos, since the project serves as a timely reminder of just how fine a singer he is. The album touches on well-worn favorites and obscurities with consistent quality and heartfelt devotion, not just from Rigsby but also from a well-chosen set of supporting musicians and featured guests, including Stanley alumnae Ricky Skaggs, Larry Sparks, Charlie Sizemore, James Alan Shelton and more. Rigsby is sharp enough to know you can polish up the Stanley sound without neutering it, and he’s talented enough to actually do it. And when he ranges more widely, well, he’s pretty darn good at that, too.
