88.1 WFSK presents
3 Nights of Great Sax feat. Euge Groove, Joe Johnson & Gerald AlbrightJazz
Student and community radio stations are much more than meets the ear. When it began broadcasting in 1973, Fisk University’s WFSK was the first FM station in Nashville to be programmed by and for the black community. Breaking into FM was a huge deal then, and the hybrid-formatted Smooth & Contemporary Jazz/Talk station continues to be a campus cornerstone, boosting local jazz and gospel music, hosting the regionally syndicated talk show What’s the 411? with Sharon Kay, and running AP and PRI content like The Tavis Smiley Show and Jazz at Lincoln Center With Wynton Marsalis. This weekend’s 40th anniversary celebration and fundraiser, themed “3 Nights of Great Sax,” aims squarely at smooth jazz fans with a trio of Billboard jazz chart-toppers. Friday night, it’s Euge Groove, who’s played behind Paula Abdul, Bonnie Raitt and other notables in addition to his solo work; Saturday, Jazz & Jokes’ co-proprietor Joe Johnson pays tribute to Jerry “Mouse” Clark, beloved teacher and WFSK DJ who passed away in May; Sunday, versatile multi-Grammy nominee Gerald Albright closes out the festivities.
