Phantom Farmer

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Joel McAnulty, aka Joel J. Dahl, has made his share of larger-than-life, upbeat pop in the past decade. With De Novo Dahl, it was the off-the-wall psychedelic kind, which didn’t seem at all out of place when played by a group dressed as Flintstones in space. Another of his current projects, By Lightning!, still makes big music, but folk and country tinges tether it a little closer to the earth. McAnulty’s latest identity, The Phantom Farmer, finds him with both feet firmly planted in tilled soil, taking a quieter, more introspective tack to explore life and spirituality, while maintaining the powerful, expressive voice that has become his calling card. The first PF record, Alpha, featured only his acoustic guitar and voice, but the new EP Golden Days, which will be released at this show, sees him slowly expanding the palette, filling out the sound with a country-folk flavored band.
