Blackberry Smoke w/Drake White & A Thousand Horses
It may seem like Blackberry Smoke is a newish band, but that’s really only because signing with Zac Brown’s Southern Ground label has boosted the quintet’s visibility. These guys hang out on the Southern-rock side of country — the story goes that the Black Crowes’ Chris Robinson gave them their name — and they’re the rare active band of that ilk that leavens heavy guitar riffs with boogying piano and actual songwriting chops. Drake White is genuinely new, though; he was in the construction business until 2010, and just now released his first country single, “The Simple Life.” What distinguishes him from the pack is his brisk and biting hard-country delivery, and his preference for putting fiddle out in front of guitar. But so far, his songs tend to blend in with the wealth of other material out there that champions a simplified lifestyle of rural self-sufficiency.
