The Marcus Roberts Trio

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Marcus Roberts’ inspired blend of vintage and contemporary influences has been prominent on the jazz scene since the mid-’80s, when he became a featured member of Wynton Marsalis’ group. He stayed with Marsalis until the early ’90s, then began fronting his own group and releasing solo, combo and trio recordings as a leader. Roberts has been lauded for his dynamic solos and imaginative use of walking basslines in his accompaniment. He’s issued critically lauded salutes to Scott Joplin and Duke Ellington, and his current trio — which includes bassist Rodney Jordan and drummer Jason Marsalis — teamed with Nashville’s Bela Fleck on the superb 2012 session Across the Imaginary Divide. Tonight, the trio will pay homage to Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane, two other jazz icons whose material Roberts has previously explored.
