The Nashville Blues and Jazz Awards of 2013 feat. Marion James, Debbie, Don Adams & moreBlues
Shallowness and bling dominate the Nashville music industry’s major awards shows, but the Marion James Musicians Aid Society’s annual Blues and Jazz Awards event is so down-home it practically smells like fatback and biscuits. This ultra-local event raises money for elderly Nashville R&B and jazz musicians, mostly for meals and medical costs. And it draws talent from the community as well. This year’s lineup includes James, Music City’s “Queen of the Blues,” as well as vocal powerhouse James “Nick” Nixon and ebullient harmonizers The Valentines — all survivors of the bustling rhythm & blues scene that thrived in the plethora of clubs along Jefferson Street into the early 1970s. The eclectic presentation also features genre-jumping guitarist Regi Wooten, soul man Clarence Dobbins, Bourbon Street regulars Jackie Wilson and Gil Gann, funk dynamos Phase6 and cigar-box guitar hero Johnny Kantreed, among others.
