Happy Together Tour 2013 feat. Flo and Eddie, Chuck Negron, Gary Puckett and The Union Group, Mark Lindsay, & Gary Lewis and The Playboys
Hippie Radio 94.5 FM is the best oldies station Nashville has had in, like, forever. Sure, you’ll hear some of the overplayed chestnuts that infest the format — but any station with the balls to butt Sly and the Family Stone’s “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)” up against “Harper Valley P.T.A.” shows a disregard for consultant-driven conformity we heartily applaud. (Also, any station that plays Maxine Nightingale’s jubilant “Right Back Where We Started From” and George McCrae’s “Rock Your Baby” alongside “Layla” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again” gets heavy rotation from us — but knock it off with the truncated radio versions of classics, OK?) So if you like what they’re doing, you’ll probably gaze wistfully at this package tour of ’60s hitmakers hosted by Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan, aka Flo and Eddie, the voices of The Turtles’ ironically ebullient singles “Happy Together” and “Elenore.” (If you’re lucky, the former Zappa compadres turned in-demand session singers will perform a greatest-hits medley of their backup vocals, ranging from T. Rex’s “Bang a Gong (Get It On)” to Springsteen’s “Hungry Heart.”) Also on the bill, coming to you from America’s state fairs and casinos: Chuck Negron from Three Dog Night, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, and Mark Lindsay from Paul Revere and the Raiders. Tickets $45-$65.
