Ramsay Midwood w/Mike and the Moonpies
Ramsay Midwood made waves a decade ago when his 2000 debut full-length, Shoot Out at the OK Chinese Restaurant, was reissued by Vanguard Records. Born in Woodstock, N.Y., in 1963, Midwood grew up in Virginia before moving to California, where he began performing his surrealistic take on ’60s blues. Shoot Out contained interesting variations on swamp blues — Midwood’s baritone rode over tracks that ambled along in the style of Slim Harpo or Dale Hawkins, with “Spinnin’ on the Rock” suggesting the influence of The Rolling Stones and The Faces. Relocating to Austin, Midwood released the 2006 Popular Delusions & the Madness of Cows, which found him adding oddball acid riffs to the groove in “Ringmaster.” His 2011 full-length, Larry Buys a Lighter, may be Midwood’s most assured record to date — he commands an idiosyncratic classic-rock groove, and his narratives blend local color and hard-earned wisdom.
