Summer At The Symphony

Tchaikovsky Extravaganza!

Classical
Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

For this year’s Summer at the Symphony series, the NSO has chosen everyone’s favorite protocol-bashing alternative to The Mighty Handful: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The upcoming shows feature numerous works encompassing the Russian composer’s colorful career, with highlights including Piano Concerto No. 1 and the 1812 Overture. The bill features a number of unsung pieces that wonderfully convey Tchaikovsky’s multifaceted abilities. The Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture and “Mozartinia” pay homage to previous masters, and “Polonaise” from Eugene Onegin offers a taste of his foremost operatic composition. Ironically placed prior to September’s Russian Spectacular, a program devoted entirely to Romantic Nationalism, Tchaikovsky Extravaganza! kicks off the summer series with an encouraging catalog exploration.
