SunTrust Coffee & Classics Series
Coffee & Classics: Copland's Billy the Kid
At the inaugural concert of its new Coffee & Classics series, the Nashville Symphony will treat concertgoers to free coffee and pastries as well as a fine program of American classical music conducted by music director Giancarlo Guerrero. First, organist Nathan Laube will join the orchestra for a performance of Stephen Paulus’ Grand Organ Concerto: a performance that’ll be recorded for an upcoming album release. Paulus — who suffered a stroke in July — is a prolific composer noted for his highly lyrical style. The second half of the program will feature the suite from Aaron Copland’s popular ballet Billy the Kid, based on the life of the legendary gunslinger. Friday and Saturday evening concerts at 8 p.m. will also include Joan Tower’s Chamber Dance and Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 2 (concertmaster Jun Iwasaki, soloist), but alas, no delicious refreshments.
