Mandy Barnett w/Nashville Symphony
To people who gripe about hating country music because it’s all twang and hats and Mama gettin’ out of jail, Nashvillians have always had a two-word rejoinder at the ready: Patsy Cline. But even at her most ’politan, Cline had a full-throated earthiness and playful sexiness that kept her country roots firmly anchored. As a newcomer slipping into the title role in the Ryman’s Always … Patsy Cline two decades ago, Mandy Barnett nailed the technical hallmarks of Cline’s voice, especially the heart-stopping catches and shifts in register. After a fine career of country and standards on her own — including her new Don Gibson tribute album I Can’t Stop Loving You — she sounds even better now that she’s allowed some room to breathe in Cline’s classic repertoire. Still, when she leans into “Sweet Dreams” or “She’s Got You,” you can be forgiven for wondering if you’re in some alternate universe where that plane landed safely 50 years ago.
