Steep Canyon Rangers
It’s best to remember that North Carolina’s Steep Canyon Rangers already had a promising career going by the time Steve Martin picked them as recording and touring partners some four years ago. That gig’s certainly elevated their stature, but they won their own Bluegrass Grammy last year, and their new album, Tell the Ones I Love, offers convincing proof that they’ve earned their own place in the music’s front ranks. This is gripping stuff — nothing but bluegrass, and yet profoundly creative. A good chunk of the credit for that goes to the main songwriters, Graham Sharp (banjo) and Charles Humphrey III (bass), but every man among them contributes, and when they bring in guests — notably drummer Jeff Sipe — the effect is simply to amplify and enhance what’s already there. The Steeps’ music may not be the future of bluegrass, but it’s surely one of its most convincing parts.
