Make Do and Mend w/Cheap Girls & Diamond Youth

Pop/Rock
Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Giant Orange, the most recent full-length studio album from Lansing, Mich., trio Cheap Girls, may have been produced by Against Me! bandleader Laura Jane Grace (then still known as Tom Gabel), but Cheap Girls have little in common with Against Me!’s brand of locomotive pop-punk. It might seem too easy to place Cheap Girls in the lineage of independent Midwestern acts that coupled meat-and-potatoes rock with arty touches — except that Cheap Girls fit right into that tradition. As younger siblings of sorts to groups like Sugar and the Pedaljets, Cheap Girls prefer an even rawer, more direct approach than those bands, which is evinced on Giant Orange and even more so on the new live album, Barely Alive in Grand Rapids, MI 12/30/12. But even with a nearly total absence of studio trickery, Cheap Girls’ guitar-driven power-trio clamor still sparkles with color and personality.
