Tim Barry & Cory Branan w/Bryan McPherson
Let’s be clear: Avail was the best punk band of the ’90s and early ’00s. No band had more integrity, played with more honesty or had better melodies, and their releases on the legendary labels Lookout and Fat Wreck Chords are some of the most listenable records in the genre. And while frontman Tim Barry may be making folk records now, all the energy and intensity that defined Avail’s legacy is still there — they’re just nestled in gorgeous acoustic arrangements and stronger, more sophisticated melodies. Barry has crisscrossed this country more times than most, and his 2012 album 40 Miler features a gravelly voice that makes the perfect traveling companion for his road-weary storytelling. Besides, he probably deserves canonization just for the line, “I can’t stand songs about writing songs / And albums over 40 minutes long.” That’s the damn truth.
