Big Sam's Funky Nation w/The Captain Midnight Band

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

A native New Orleanian who began making noise in the late ’90s with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Big Sam Williams is a trombonist and composer who combines Crescent City tradition with post-George Clinton funk. He formed Big Sam’s Funky Nation in 2001, and the group has released such acclaimed full-length collections as 2006’s Take Me Back, which features funky tunes on the order of  “Bah-Duey-Duey.” Williams has stayed busy: He played on Allen Toussaint and Elvis Costello’s 2006 The River in Reverse, and has appeared in the New Orleans-based Treme TV series. On last year’s Funky Monkey EP, the band essayed the title track along with a cover of The Black Keys’ “Lonely Boy.” What makes modern New Orleans brass bands interesting is their facility with pop material — Funky Nation’s repertoire includes a version of The Jackson 5’s 1974 hit “Dancing Machine.”
