AC Entertainment Presents

Ani DiFranco

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

On last year’s superb ¿Which Side Are You On?, Ani DiFranco used New Orleans musicians to create a tense, lightly swinging folk-funk groove all her own. With terse guitar figures augmenting structures that played games with time signatures, ¿Which Side Are You On? paid tribute to DiFranco’s folkie roots — the record featured Pete Seeger along with Ivan and Cyril Neville — by subverting folk-music conventions. A musician and label-owner of immense smarts and ambition, DiFranco makes her home in New Orleans these days, and ¿Which Side makes a case for the kind of creative professionalism that can explode musical boundaries. Over the years, DiFranco has collaborated with everyone from Prince to labor organizer and folk singer Utah Phillips, and her record label, Righteous Babe, has done good work by releasing such monuments of syncretic pop as Arto Lindsay’s excellent 1999 full-length Prize.
