OneRepublic w/Mayer Hawthorne

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

This is not — repeat, not — an endorsement of One Republic. The band is probably the shittiest thing ever to drop out of a major label’s asshole. They are the aural equivalent of a norovirus — you know, the one that causes nausea, forceful vomiting and watery diarrhea — except they just won’t ever go away. This is, however, an endorsement of their choice in openers, who happen to fall on the exact opposite end of a “pleasant experience.” Mayer Hawthorne’s latest album, Where Does This Door Go, continues his stunning run of blue-eyed soul, and earns him a spot alongside legends like Hall & Oates and Michael McDonald. Evolving beyond his strict revivalist roots to encompass a whole spectrum of modern, yacht-ready sounds, Hawthorne’s groove has grown into adulthood, and marked him as one of the most engaging artists around.
