Unknown Mortal Orchestra

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Earlier this year, psychedelic rocker and native New Zealander Ruban Nielson released his sophomore effort as Unknown Mortal Orchestra. The record, succinctly titled II, features the same supple, gracefully played guitar lines and beguiling falsetto vocals we were introduced to on UMO’s eponymous 2011 debut, but there’s a newfound cohesion here. II is the soundtrack to a gifted guitarist and songwriter slipping comfortably into his own singular sound — a sound that lays lithely entwined bass and guitar lines (think a tuneful but disjointed MGMT with hints of Hendrix) over thick R&B grooves. On Oct. 29, Unknown Mortal Orchestra will release the Blue Record EP, which features acoustic versions of three previously released UMO songs, plus covers of Dirty Projectors’ “Swing Lo Magellan” and Beck’s “Puttin’ It Down.” Blue showcases not only Nielson’s skillful fingerpicking, but also the melodic complexity of his originals. Good stuff.
