Snakehips w/Red Colt, Boo Ray

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

In the black-hole universe that is post-Big Star power pop, it helps to have a subject — something to write about besides the formalist thrill of  jangling guitar licks and impeccably controlled psychedelic flourishes. In that universe, Snakehips is notable for the high-quality songwriting of Mark Harrison, who has led various incarnations of the band for 20 years. On last year's full-length, Must Be Present to Win, Harrison & Co. wrote about politics and culture on "Tennessee" — one of the best place-name songs in recent memory. "Only One" is more Grin than Big Star, while "Swinger" is about sex and delusion. Harrison grew up in Murfreesboro and did time in Memphis with such Bluff City eccentrics as Alex Chilton and Tav Falco, but his current music is in a Marc Bolan-meets-Bowie vein — it's never overdone, and Harrison is a sly, literate songwriter.
