Della Mae Album Release

Bluegrass
Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

As is the case in a good many genres of popular music, women are still a minority among bluegrass players. Murphy Henry’s just-published history of bluegrass-picking women is even titled Pretty Good for a Girl. But while a new generation of formidable female pickers — like the five in Della Mae — may initially be grabbing attention because of their gender, it’s their vision and virtuosity that are keeping them in the spotlight, and that’s exactly how it should be. Della Mae’s second album, and first on Rounder Records — This World Oft Can Be — works the fertile territory between singer-songwriter, bluegrass and indie-savvy arrangements. They’re celebrating its release with a show at The Station Inn. (And the group’s guitarist, Courtney Hartman, will return at 8 p.m. Tuesday for a duo performance with already respected and still-rising singer-mandolinist Sierra Hull, who’s rumored to be recording an album with Vance Powell.)
