Courtney Jaye w/JP5

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

For years, Nashville’s had a reputation for chewing up and spitting out dreams of mainstream stardom. We can thank Courtney Jaye for offering up an alternative narrative. After a disillusioning experience with Island/Def Jam in L.A., she sought refuge here a half-dozen years ago. It’s not that she’s seen strictly smooth sailing since, but following her palate-cleansing Polynesian indie-country album, The Exotic Sounds of Courtney Jaye, she’s sure as hell found her sweet spot. Jaye’s new one, Love & Forgiveness, is a shining specimen of a roots-pop set, stocked with breezy hooks and recorded with a crew that splits the difference between studio precision and analog warmth. Independently released or not, the album deserves a broad hearing. If it had arrived in the mid-’70s, Jaye would be on her way to radio stardom. Since there’s renewed appreciation for Fleetwood Mac in the air right now, hopefully this will be good timing for her too.
