Los Colognes w/Reno Bo & Steelism
Jay Rutherford and Aaron Mortenson set to networking as soon as they landed in Nashville in 2010. With Micah Hulsher on keys and Gordon Persha on the low notes, the Chicago transplants have backed up local luminaries like Nikki Lane, Keith Gordon and Rayland Baxter, but they’re now striking out on their own, with a little help from their friends. Once known as The Clones, the group is the latest to put their own twist on J.J. Cale’s characteristic laid-back blues-shuffling and drum-tight playing, which lit a fire under Eric Clapton among many others. Los Colognes’ debut album, Working Together, has a windy-and-warm feel blowing throughout, which the title track uses to soften the blow of the realization that “working together is easy, but living together is hard.” To celebrate the album’s release, they’ve enlisted labelmate Reno Bo and band, whose crunchy take on power pop nicely contrasts both Los Colognes and the cool jive of Steelism, the all-star instrumental group anchored by Caitlin Rose’s side-gentlemen Spencer Cullum and Jeremy Fetzer.
