Owen w/Slingshot Dakota

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

I’m not sure why, but it feels like Mike Kinsella — who hails from Chicago and performs most frequently as Owen — needs an introduction. Perhaps that’s because the songwriting workhorse has never received his proper due from critics, at least not enough to rally a critical mass around him. Despite this tragedy, Kinsella — whose CV includes seminal acts like Joan of Arc and American Football, among many others — has continued to write album after album of lush, intricate songs from a perspective that can be both witty, slightly bookish, and certainly touching. But what really distinguishes Kinsella is his competence as a musician, and the way he deploys that competence. Whether he’s playing in hushed or raucous tones (as he seems more wont to do lately), Kinsella always manages to shred elegantly, if that’s even possible, exhibiting immaculate taste and restraint no matter what sound he opts to explore next.
