OBN III's, Ex-Cult, D. Watusi & Cy Barkley and the Way Outsiders

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

The renewed interest in garage rock among young folks isn’t news to anyone, but it’s far from played out for bands that keep busting ass to put on a good show. Austin’s OBN III’s, named for leader Orville Bateman Neely III, carry a strong MC5/Stooges vibe, right down to the way Neely shuns all instruments but his voice, leaving him free to careen around the stage with his Thurston Moore snarl while the band tears it down. Memphis’ coed quintet Ex-Cult are touring their self-titled debut, produced by Ty Segall at San Francisco’s Bauer Mansion, which finds them constantly riding the edge of the curve with notes of post-punk and New Wave in their brew. Our own D. Watusi features Nashville’s Dead honcho Dillon Watson out front, his great barbaric yawps tethered to the earth by Christina Norwood’s old-timey rock ’n’ roll electric piano, and Cy Barkley and The Way Outsiders deliver a megaton payload in the slam-dance anthem department that will put surfers in place from the word “go.”
