Bad Rabbits, Air Dubai & SexxPop/Rock
It’s encouraging that the members of Bad Rabbits envision the heavy-rock side of their sound as a backdrop for lovemaking and even as wedding-anthem fodder. The Boston quintet pays homage to its buttery-smooth R&B influences in every nook and cranny of its full-length debut American Love, but clearly it considers guitar distortion an aphrodisiac as well. The slashing adamantine riff that drives leadoff track “We Can Roll,” for example, impassions the song’s soul-mate-for-life premise — a theme that recurs alongside lecherous keyboard- and groove-centric tunes written with wet T-shirt contests and pole dancing in mind. Apparently, Bad Rabbits want to provide the soundtrack for your wedding — and your bachelor party. This variety of mood partially obscures how well the band blends funk and R&B strains from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s into a kind of riff-spiked porridge, but it also defines American Love as an album for many occasions. Just be careful not to hit the track about “big booty bitches” when you’re about to propose.
