Smith Westerns w/Wampire

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Chicago’s Smith Westerns received critical acclaim with both 2009’s self-titled debut — which they recorded as teenagers — and 2011’s Dye It Blonde. They returned last month with the significantly higher-fidelity Soft Will, a batch of glimmering, guitar-centric pop songs that (as with SW’s previous releases) nod so profusely to glam giants like Bowie and T. Rex they’re practically bobble-headed. Soft Will, however, has a heavier dose of Flaming Lips in the mix (probably more Yoshimi, despite the titular similarities to The Soft Bulletin). With patient progressions, grand but tasteful synth embellishments, balanced arrangements and keenly focused guitar work, this long-player provides a little sliver of the maturity prior Smith Westerns releases may have been missing — this is the sound of a band moving on from their simple influence-channeling days toward a sound of their own. Portland, Ore.’s Wampire will appear in support Sunday night at Exit/In, with the Westerns stopping by Grimey’s for an in-store Monday afternoon
