Jonathan Kasper Album Release

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

On his new full-length In the Know, Jonathan Kasper operates in the gray area between rock ’n’ roll parody and pop sincerity. Kasper sings in the overheated voice of a ’70s rock star throughout the record, and his music sounds like a circa-1981 band’s attempt to do a New Wave-influenced version of British Invasion rock. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Kasper makes his home in Nashville these days, and he’s a savvy songwriter who understands the subtleties of ’60s rock — “Done, Done Deal” is a homage to The Zombies, while “My Old Friend, John” is a tribute to John Lennon and The Beatles. Kasper has a way with super-banal rock lyrics and charmingly blatant musical references: “Keep makin’, keep shakin’ / Keep groovin’ now / Keep lovin’, keep dreamin’ / We’re all screaming now,” he sings in the Rolling Stones-influenced “And That Look in Your Eyes.”
