Souls of Mischief w/Kev Choice & Amerigo Gazaway

Hip-Hop

Get out your Rosetta Stone, ’cause it’s time to read some hieroglyphics! Souls of Mischief was the first group to emerge from the ranks of the West Coast proto-backpacker collective of the same name, which also included Casual and Del tha Funkee Homosapien. Their funk-heavy, rhyme-packed debut, ’93 Til Infinity, shares turf with A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul, and is enjoying a well-deserved reputation as an overlooked classic. Celebrating the LP’s 20th anniversary, the Souls are on a cross-country tour with a full band, and their Nashville stop shines a light on one of our finest MC/producers, Amerigo Gazaway. We’d be hard-pressed to find a better addition to the bill: Despite a recent cease-and-desist from Sony in regards to Bizarre Tribe, a Pharcyde/Tribe Called Quest mashup of weapons-grade dopeness, Amerigo and his partners at Gummy Soul have impressed no less a tastemaker than Roots drummer Questlove — a man not known for his tolerance of bullshit — who has distributed Gazaway’s most recent mixtapes via Okayplayer.
