Nashville Dancin': Donna the Buffalo, Tommy Malone, 18 SOUTH & The Lonely Biscuits

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

There are reasons Donna the Buffalo — whose Tonight, Tomorrow and Yesterday (Sugar Hill) arrives later this month — have been around for a quarter of a century, and the city and its sponsoring partners have chosen wisely in headlining the kickoff date in this year’s Nashville Dancin’ series with their irresistible grooves. Though it’s fair, at least in one sense, to tag the quintet as a jam band, the term gives short shrift to their sure-footed mingling of a variety of roots music elements — though, to be fair again, it underlines the aspects of the band’s identity summarized in the title of one of the new album’s catchiest numbers, “I Love My Tribe.” Jim Lauderdale makes a dandy cameo in the song’s video, which serves not only as a reminder that he made a fine album with the group a few years ago, but that they’ve got some real chops in just about every department.
