Nashville Dancin': Shooter Jennings

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

The son of outlaw country artists Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, Shooter Jennings takes the idea of transgression further than his parents ever did — like Hank Williams III, Shooter makes music that adds post-punk aesthetics to old-school angst. After leading Los Angeles country-glam band Stargunn, Shooter made his solo debut with 2005’s Put the “O” Back in Country, and he hasn’t looked back: His 2010 concept record Black Ribbons is an amalgam of English-style psychedelic rock, synthesizer overdubs and songs about the pernicious effects of modern culture. Black Ribbons features narration by writer Stephen King, while this year’s The Other Life sports a guest shot by Black Oak Arkansas singer Jim “Dandy” Mangrum on “15 Million Light-Years Away.” The Other Life finds Jennings doing weird things with the outlaw ethos — check out the berserk saxophone-and-guitar section that closes out “The Gunslinger.”
