Nashville Dancin': Delta Rae

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Not to be confused with Della Mae, Delta Rae is a sextet from North Carolina that features the vocal harmonies and songwriting of siblings Ian, Eric and Brittany Hölljes. On last year’s full-length Carry the Fire, the group combined soul-influenced singing with the kind of modernized folk-rock production style favored by such bands as Fleet Foxes and Mumford & Sons. They’re not a country band, although Delta Rae seems obsessed with Fleetwood Mac, just like Little Big Town or Lady Antebellum — the Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham even contributed guitar to Delta Rae’s “If I Loved You,” which doesn’t have much to do with Fleetwood Mac’s style. Carry the Fire is catchy, sententious pop at its most carefully calculated, with “Bottom of the River” adding rich harmonies to mechanical rhythms. What’s remarkable about Delta Rae is their omnivorous appetite for modern pop: Check out the Sufjan Stevens-inspired piano that begins “Forgive the Children We Once Were.”
