Natural Child w/JP5, Kings of the F***King Sea & Jem Cohen
Well, as far as attending local rock ’n’ roll shows is concerned, this is one that we’ll refer to as a no-brainer. Scuzzy, swampy, Stones- and Young-worshipping rock outfit Natural Child needs little introduction. Their prolific tenure as Nashville’s finest stoner-rock ensemble has given us everything from badass hangover anthems like the excellent “8 a.m. Blues” to occasional reggae cover sets (performed under the name “Natural Lion,” naturally). JP5 — fronted by former King Tuff sideman Joey Plunket — is probably the closest thing to a supergroup that Music City’s rock set boasts, with members of Cy Barkley and the Way Outsiders, The Ettes, Those Darlins and more supplementing Plunket’s strong Southern power pop with well-rounded and well-played instrumentation. Unapologetically loud garage-punk duo Kings of the F**King Sea — yes, that’s how they style their name, which is a reference to a book of poems by Dan Boehl — is basically the sonic equivalent of a neutron bomb, and longtime Ettes bassist Jem Cohen has lately been stepping center stage to deliver power-pop gems he’s kept stashed away from us for far too long. Phew. OK. I think that covers everything.
