Don Williams

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Williams may not be quite as much of a household name as a lot of his peers, but that only adds to the charm and mystique of The Gentle Giant — a nickname he earned for his laid-back demeanor and rich, deep bass-baritone voice. For evidence of his cred and influence, consider some of the other acts that have covered songs from his catalog — everyone from Eric Clapton and Pete Townshend to Alan Jackson and Alison Krauss to Lambchop, Tortoise and Bonnie “Prince” Billy. (The last two collaborated on a version of Williams’ “Pancho.”) For a taste of his breezy magic, check out the early-’80s clip of Williams performing “I Believe in You” on YouTube. Or better yet, see him in person during his two-night stand at the Schermerhorn, a venue whose acoustics should be perfect to showcase the 74-year-old singer’s booming voice, which has held up remarkably well over the years.
