Angel Olsen w/Honey Locust & Lylas
There’s nothing flamboyant about Angel Olsen’s stage presence, but when she sings, crowds don’t just listen — they are stunned into pin-drop silence by her penetrating gaze and a voice that blends operatic control with earthy, soulful expression in a way that’s rarely heard outside Nina Simone records. A recent Jagjaguwar Records signee, Olsen has spent the past year getting comfortable with a band of her own, adding electric rock ’n’ roll to the mix of vintage folk and country styles that were woven through 2012’s Halfway Home. Based on the sneak preview given in this spring’s “Sleepwalker/Sweet Dreams” 7-inch, the rock element only increases her ability to bewitch and bewilder. When we last saw Honey Locust, the anthemic neo-folk troupe was heading back into the studio to finish up their full-length debut, and elegiac folksters Lylas have been relatively quiet since their spring tour with Wooden Wand, so we’re excited for an opportunity to catch up with both.
