Hockey w/Saint Motel & Swimm

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

The New York synth duo Hockey can relate to something many Nashville bands have experienced at some point. Signed and dropped by at least one major label — they’ve left two, but it’s hard to discern whether the split from Capitol was self-induced — Hockey has seen its once palpable buzz reduced to a distant memory. Indeed, five years ago they were one of Spin magazine’s “hot new” bands, played Later … With Jools Holland, and were on a meteoric rise not unknown to acts like MGMT or The Strokes. But Hockey’s just-released second LP, Wyeth Is, has barely registered in the press or (seemingly) with the public. The record may not be as instantly accessible as Hockey’s debut, Mind Chaos, but the somewhat silent reception isn’t indicative of its quality. Nodding to ’80s hip-hop and reggae culture, Wyeth Is captures a band with a strong sense of what it wants to achieve. Likeminded acts Saint Motel and Swimm open.
